Munich Arena has moved a step closer to opening after the City of Freising gave the project key planning approval. The decision completes the city’s planning process and clears the way for the next phase of development of the new 20,000-capacity venue, which is set to open in 2029.
Located at Munich International Airport, Munich Arena is being developed as one of Europe’s largest and most advanced live entertainment venues. Through Live Nation’s global network, the venue will help attract more international tours alongside leading domestic artists, while its decades of venue expertise will help create the best possible experience for fans, artists and promoters. Designed as an open venue, the Arena will welcome artists, promoters and event organisers across a broad range of live entertainment, from rock and pop to hip-hop, electronic music and other major live events.
The venue’s distinctive diamond-shaped exterior, inspired by the Bavarian flag, will create a new landmark for the region while reflecting its local heritage. Built with a “Music First” philosophy, the arena will feature world-class acoustics, excellent sightlines and state-of-the-art production facilities.
Once open, the arena will further strengthen Munich and Bavaria’s position as a destination for live entertainment, attracting major international tours and audiences from across Germany, Europe and beyond. Alongside its cultural impact, the venue is expected to deliver significant economic benefits. A Deloitte study estimates Munich Arena will generate approximately €355 million in annual gross value added for Munich and the wider region each year once operational.
The latest approval formally adopts the Zoning Plan and the corresponding amendment to the Land Use Plan, marking the successful completion of the municipal planning process. With this milestone achieved, the project will now move into its next phase of development ahead of Munich Arena’s planned opening in 2029.
